Ibex acrobatics - אקרובטיקה של יעל

גובה החומה (בטיילת הנוף ליד בית ההארחה) - כמטר וארבעים. עובייה

לא יותר מ-15 ס"מ. בקפיצה אחת עולה היעל הזכר ומייצב עצמו עם ארבע

רגליו בדיוק במקום. מיומנות קרקסית זאת רוכשים כל היעלים ללא יוצא

מן הכלל בשבילים שבין המצוקים. על טעויות אפשר לשלם במחיר שבירת

קרן, ולגוף אין חלקי חילוף. צילם אורח בבית ההארחה

The height of the wall by the panoramic trail around the

guest-house is about 140 cm. Its width is not more than

15 cm. In one jump the male Ibex brings its four feet exactly

on the safe spot. This skill is learned in the desert trails

between the steep cliffs. One poor mistake can cause the Ibex

to break his horns, and there are no replacements. The picture

was taken by one of our guest-house visitors.

Water in the Dry Canyon - מים בקניון היבש

השנה מאד שחונה. כמעט ולא ירד גשם במדבר יהודה. יום הבחירות לכנסת

היטיב עמנו מעט, וגשם ירד, והביא אפילו שיטפון קטן בנחל דוד. השיטפון

הספיק למלא את הגבים במים צלולים, ותענוג לבקר בקניון כעת. המים יישארו

בגבים עד תחילת הקיץ, קרוב לוודאי, ואז יחזור הקניון להיות הקניון היבש

This year rains were very scarce until now, but on elecyion-day

we got some rain on the Judean Desert, and there was even

a small flood in Nachal David. It was enough to fill the lower

places in the canyon's floor with fresh water. That's the best

time to visit the upper part of the canyon, the part that is

called 'the dry canyon'. Now it is not dry, and if you want to

go through it all the way, plan to get wet! Water will hold in

the shady places until early summer.

Tristram Grackle - טריסטרמית

הטריסטרמית קרויה על שם איש הדת הנוצרי האנגלי הנרי בייקר טריסטרם

שהיה גם חוקר מדבריות ארץ ישראל. בעבר נקראה בשם זרזיר ים המלח

ציפור חביבה זו אינה מפחדת מקרבת האדם, ועם מעט סבלנות תוכלו להאכילה

Hernry Baker Tristram was an Englishman who travelled

and researched Israeli deserts. This lovely bird is called after

him. Usually you will see packs of them together, but

sometimes they will appear in small nmbers, and even then

they do not fear human presence close by.
