מנדלה על הקרקע, עשויה מחומרי טבע - חצץ, חלוקי אבן וחול בצבעים שונים. את

הסדנה מנחות מיכלי וריקי, ממייסדות האתר, המגיעות לעין-גדי ממרחק, כדי לפגוש

באווירה המקומית המיוחדת את המעוניינים בחוויה המשותפת. המנדלה לא אמורה

A weekend workshop at BEIT HATAMAR, a center for ancient

and natural arts and crafts. Michali and Riki, the founders of this

site, come to Ein-Gedi from far away to meet their fans, and to

build with mud, experience basketry and in the morning - craete

together a mandala, made on the ground with natural materials

like coloured sand, pebbles and gravel. The mandala is not supposed

to last forever - it will disintegrate during the coming weeks.

The Chorisia belongs to same family of the Baobab. Its origin is

South America. It blooms in two colours - pink and light-yellow.

In its early years, the tree protects its trunk with very impressive

The regional hiking club, guided by Eli Raz, has started another

season of nature-hikes in the landscapes of the Judean desert.

The club is opened for all ages, but most of the devoted participants

can boast each of a few grandchildren. In the picture - Zeevik Meller

from Ein-Gedi after climbing down the cliffs of Nachal Abuv.

הוא 350. תלמידי בית הספר התיכון מקדימים את היום ומתכנסים על מגרש

הכדורגל המיובש, ויוצרים עבור התמונה את הספרות 350. בשבת תתקיים

התכנסות על חוף ים המלח, ובה ינסו להגביר את המודעות לבעיית ים המלח

October 24th is going to be the day when lots of people

around the world will gather to raise the awareness of

all of us to the enviromental problems of our planet. Ein-Gedi

highschool students gather 2 days before this day on the dried

football field of the Kibbutz, and create the number 350, which

is the target number for decreasing the amount of CO2 in the

planet's atmosphere. On Shabbat another gathering will be

arranged, on the Dead Sea shore, to raise the awareness of all

of us the the problem of the Dead Sea, that looses so much water

Tamar Festival in Ein-Gedi - פסטיבל התמר בעין-גדי

במסגרת אירועי פסטיבל התמר בסוכות בוצעו מספר קונצרטים בסגנון קאמרי

על הדשא המרכזי של בית-ההארחה בקיבוץ, מתחת לבאובב הגדול. בתמונה

הופעה של מזי כהן ורביעית ג'ז בתכנית של שירה בסגנון ג'ז. הקהל המנומס

שישב ברובו על הדשא במזג אויר נעים הלך והתחמם, ובסוף התכנית דרש עוד

The Tamar music festival celebrated 10 years. The festival

runs always in the week of Sukkot, in different sites in the

Dead Sea region. Ein-Gedi guest-house and hotle hosted a few

garden concerts under the big Baobab tree. In the picture -

a jazz concert with the singer Mazi Cohen and a jazz quartet.

The audience, seated on the lawn, warmed up during the

program, and in the end demanded and got a few anchore-pieces.

Ziziphus spina-christi is a thorny tree, and some christian folklore

believes that the crown of thorns that Jesus wore on his via-dolorosa

was made of this tree's branches. Here, in Nachal Arugot, a very

old Ziziphus tree struggles against powers of nature: the Winter

floods that run under it and expose its roots, and the Hyrax that

climb on its branches to eat the fresh green leaves.

Morning in the Nachal David nature reserve. A family of

Hyrax rests on the thick branches of an old Zuzypus tree.

You can get as near as one meter, and they will not care...

You can take one photo and another, and they will not

even move. The excitement of the tourist can grow as the

A pleasent evening of beautiful music on the lawn of the

hotel. A guest orchestra and choir fro Stutgart, Germany

with five solo-singers, international & Israeli, performed

the beautiful oratoris 'Shaul' by Hendel. In the background -

בבוקר ה-26 באוגוסט הגיעו 22 חניכי המכינה הקדם-צבאית המתחילה פעולותיה

אצלנו. הם הלכו יומיים במדבר יהודה, לנו בשטח, ולבסוף, בהליכה מאומצת בשעות

האחרונות של הלילה, הופיעו על רחבת בריכת השחיה. כעשרים חברי קיבוץ ועוד

אוהדים מבחוץ המתינו להם בהתלהבות. חניכי המכינה ישהו אצלנו עד חודש מרס

ואחרי כן יתגייסו לצה"ל. איחולי הצלחה לצעירים ולצוות

Morning of August 26th. 22 young boys arrive at the hotel's

swimming pool after 2 days walk in the Judean Desert, ready

to start their new program of Ein-Gedi-Mechina. The program

will deal with all kinds of activities - study, work, volunteering

and physical training preparing them for the army service.

What's new in David water - מה חדש בנחל דוד

נקודת איסוף מי נחל ערוגות לצרכי השקיית השדות החקלאיים הועברה כבר

לפני מספר שנים לקצה התחתון של השמורה. בהסכמה עם רשות שמורות הטבע

והגנים הוחלט לאפשר למי הנחל לזרום לכל אורך השמורה עד מוצא הנחל מהקניון

ושם, לאחר שחילחלו המים אל מתחת לחלוקי הנחל ונעלמו, לשאוב אותם לשימוש

נוסף לתועלת האדם. כעת מושלם המבצע המקביל בנחל דוד. נקודת ה'תפיסה' מועברת

על ידי המסגרים שלנו למקום נמוך יותר, מחוץ לקניון. על אובדן חלק מהמים

מפצה במידה מסוימת המאגר הגדול הקולט אליו בחודשי החורף את מי העודפים של

השמורה, מה שמאפשר לנצלם בחודשי הקיץ, כשצריכת המים עולה

Planned and agreed by the Kibbutz and the Nature Reserve

Authority - the construction that cathces water from Nachal

David is moved from inside the canyon to a lower spot, after

the water have flowed with no interruption through the reserve

and disappeared under the pebbles. That way the reserve get

the maximum from these waters, and the Date plots still get

what they need. Of course - some water is lost that way, and

the compensation comes from the big reservoire that gets the

extra water from the reserve on the Winter months. This

reservoire serves the irrigation on the hot Summer, when the

יום ביקור של 'ידידי כדור הארץ במזרח התיכון' בפרק האקולוגי, לשעבר - פינת

החי של הקיבוץ. הקבוצה מנתה כעשרה מחנכים ואנשי תיירות משטחי הרשות

הפלסטינית, הקשורים בארגון זה, העוסק בפעולות חינוך והגברת המודעות למשימת

השמירה על הסביבה. המארחת - גונדי שחל, חברת עין-גדי, יוזמת הפיכת פינת החי

לפרק אקולוגי חינוכי. בתמונה - בריכות לטיהור מים אפורים, המגיעים מגן הילדים

שמעל הטראסה הזאת. המים עוברים טיהור ע"י שורשי הצמחים השתולים בחצץ

שבבריכות, ויוצאים מהן זכים וצלולים, והם משקים את צמחי עין-גדי השתולים במורד

הטראסה. זהו רק פריט אחד במתקנים האקולוגים המופעלים בפינה זו

A visit of our 'Friends of the Earth - Middle East' from the Palestinian

authority to our ecological park, an interesting site, once serving our

educational system as the kids' zoo. The initiator of this educational

project is Gundi Shachal, and she hosts this visit also. In the picture -

one of the ecilogical demonstration projects - shallow pools, filled with

gravel, that recieve 'grey water' from the kindergarten above. The plants'

roots purify the water, that come out of the pool clean and fresh,

and irrigate a garden og native local plants.

Baobab flower פרח הבאובב

פריחת הבאובב היא לילית. עם חשכה נפתחים הניצנים החדשים, והפרח מרהיב

העין חי למשך לילה אחד חיי-לילה סוערים. ממערות המדבר מגיחים ובאים העטלפים

הקטנים, המריחים את אבקת הפרחים, ובאים לבקר. עם בוקר הולך הפרח ונסגר

Baobab flowers are nocturnal. When darkness comes, the new

flwer opens up to live for one night. Small bats from the desert

caves are attracted by the flowers' smell, and come to visit.

The Perfume Garden - ערוגות הבושם

השתלמות מדריכים בגן הבוטני מתמקדת הפעם בערוגות הבושם ובגידול הבושם

בעין-גדי בימי-קדם. ענת רז, מבכירי גנני עין-גדי מציגה את אתר ערוגות-הבושם

הנמצא ליד חדר האוכל של בית ההארחה, ואשר מרכז מזה שנתיים אוסף מעניין

של צמחי ריח, בושם ומרפא, וביניהם המור, הכופר והלבונה. הגן נשקף אל מול

מצוקי עין-גדי, שלרגליהם משתרעות מדרגות ההר שהיו מעובדות בימי-קדם

בשיחי מור, לבונה ואפרסמון

The botanical garden guides need from time to time some

refreshing meetings. This time the study focused on the

perfume bushes that were grown in Ein-Gedi in ancient days.

The perfume garden is a new project, that started about

two years ago. Now it is a collection of many interesting plants

like Myrrh, Frankincense, Henna, plants that were grown

on the slopes of the mountains in man-made terrasses.

Graduating Highschool !! סוף סוף סוף לביה"ס התיכון

בכל קיץ, לקראת סיום שנת הלימודים ומבחני הבגרות, מבלים תלמידי י"ב

של ביה"ס התיכון בעין-גדי את הלילה בביה"ס, ומכינים הפתעה למורים

ולתלמידים הבאים בבוקר ללימודים. ההפתעות היו בשנים האחרונות לא

עדינות, בלשון המעטה, וצוות ביה"ס עשה מאמצים רבים להגיע להסכמות

עם התלמידים העליזים בנוגע למותר ולאסור. הפעם התעלו התלמידים והכינו

חצר מקורית, בסגנון המערב הפרוע, ופגשו את התלמידים הצעירים יותר

ואת המורים כשהם אינם אפופים אדי אלכוהול. צילום: לריסה

Every Summer, close to the end of the school year and

the matriculation exams, the school-graduates stay all

night at school and prepare a surprise for the teachers

and the younger students who come to schhol in the

morning. Last years were quite problematic, since the

graduates were very provocative. This Summer,

after an intensive dialog with the school staff , the kids

came up with some creative ideas, and prepaed a

wild-west style happening. The scientific paradigma

about the possibility of having fun with not much

בשנים 1953-1956, קיבוץ בשנים 1956-1959, ואכסניית-נוער

ובי"ס שדה בשנים שאחרי כן, עד שגם אלה עקרו לנקודת הקבע שלהם

בגבעה שמצפון לנחל דוד. עצי פיקוס ששרדו את שנות ההזנחה פיתחו

שורשי אוויר מרשימים במיוחד. המקום מחכה לשיקום ולהפיכה למרכז חינוכי

This is the site where it all began: From 1948 to 1953

it served as an army post, then, until 1956 it was a Nachal

post, one of the very first in Israel. The young civilian

Kibbutz continued to build itself there until 1959, and then

the place was run by the two new initiatives - the Youth-

Hostel and the Field-School. When these two institutes

moved to their permanent sites north of Nachal David -

the place was deserted. Only few trees, like this giant

אתר זה הציג לא פעם תמונות נהדרות של זריחה. שקיעות הן בדרך כלל לא

מרשימות במיוחד בעין-גדי. השמש נעלמת מעבר להרים בשעה שהאור עדיין

מלא. אבל אם תעברו לצד השני של ים המלח, אל מפתח נחל ארנון, ותצפו לכיוון

עין-גדי בשעת שקיעה, זו תהיה שקיעת שמש מרהיבה! בצילום: אלי רז, מראשוני

Sunsets are not very impressive in Ein-Gedi: The sun disappears

behind the mountain long before darkness comes. But if you have

the chance of visiting the opposite side of the Dead Sea - the

Jordanian side, you will enjoy magnificent sunsets. This picture

was taken from Nachal Arnon area, and the person in the picture

is Eli Raz, one of the first tour-guides who explored the many

beautiful possible hiking routes in Jordan.

שבאופק המזרח - וכבר אור. זו שעתם של מהלכי הבוקר, חלקם מכורים להליכה

מזה שנים, והם נהנים מבריזה קרירה משהו, משקט, מציוצי ציפורים, ובעונה זו

גם משעה אחרונה של פרחי הקקטוסים, מלכות הלילה, בטרם ייסגרו. כמעט הגענו

ליום הארוך ביותר

Early morning, just before the Sun rises above the Eastern

Moav mountains. We get close to the longest day of the year.

This is the hour of the morning-walkers, some of them are

edicted to the walking in the quiet, to the sounds of the birds

and to the slightly cool breeze, before the heat will send most of

them back into their air-conditioned homes.

The night of the queens - לילן של המלכות

המלכה היותר בולטת בנוכחותה בגן היא קקטוס הקרוי סלניצראוס

וכבר לפני יותר משבוע החלו ראשוניו לפרוח. אמש פרחה המסלעה

שמתחת לבניין בית הספר התיכון בשפע מרשים במיוחד. החגיגה היא

למשך לילה אחד, אם כי הלילה יפרחו פרחים נוספים

The most significant queen of our nights is the Selenicereus

cactus. These wonderful flowers strted to bloom about a week

ago, but yesterday may have been the climax - among the rocky

garden under the High School buildings.
