ענת אשד, אמנית ממוצא, עוסקת בציור ובפיסול, ומקדישה זמן רב

בעשור האחרון לנסיונות לפסל במלח. הטכניקה מסובכת ומתסכלת

וסודות המקצוע שמורים עם ענת. כמה מפסלי המלח של ענת ניתנים

לצפייה במרכז המבקרים של מפעל 'אהבה' במצפה שלם. לאחרונה

הציגה ענת תערוכה רטקוספקטיבית של עבודותיה, ובה נכללו גם פסלי

Anat Eshed is an artist from Motza, near Jerusalem. She creates

drawing and sculptures. A great part of her time in the last ten years

Anat has dedicated to experiment in salt from the Dead Sea. The

technique is difficult, and sometimes even frustrating, but the results

are very impressing. Some of her salt works can be seen in the

permanent exhibition in the visitor-center of 'Ahava' factory in

Tu Bishvat, the new year of the trees, is celebrated this week

all over Israel, and the almond trees are in full blossom. Ein-Gedi

doesn't enjoy the presence of almond trees, but we have the

Rotem (Retama), native of the Judean desert, that reminds us

the white and fragrant flowers of the almonds.

Nahal Rahaf, south of Massada, has quite a short and impressing

canyon. This picture was taken from the exit of this canyon towards

the Dead Sea shore, on a hiking day of the junior high school.

An unusual observation point on the top of Massada

from the summit of Mt. El'azar, south of Massada.

The Romans circled the fortress by eight camps and

a wall that connected these camps to each other, and

the eighth camp can still be seen on Mt. El'azar. This

was the one spot from which the Romans could see

what's going on in Massada.

St. Gerasimus monastery, one of the monasteries in the

area close to the place where the Jordan meets with the

Dead Sea. The place has built in the last years a hostel

for the christian pilgrims who come to visit the baptism

spots near by.

Dror Sandalon captured this unique sight one morning on his

daily walking tour. The Ibex are penetrating into the Kibbutz

in their search for food. This brave male climbed the roof of

a storage building in order to reach the new fresh leaves of a

Zizipus tree.

The rooms will be occupied in about 2 weeks - until then there

is a lot of work inside and outside. The main attraction of these

rooms is the view to the direction of Nachal Arugot.

The monthly hike of the regional hiking club with Eli Raz visited
Wadi Muraba'at. In the picture - the famous cave with its cubical
entrance, which gave the Wadi it's name.

Nachal Og is a lovely canyon at the north of the Dead Sea
shore. The hiking trail is short and quite easy, but has a few
spots where the rock is steep, and one has to use the help of
the iron pegs that are stuck into the rock, which makes the
hike even more a pleasuer. So no wonder - this trail has
become very popular for families on Shabbat mornings, which
results in traffic-jams. Plan your hike to a less visited hour!

At a beautiful spot, facing the views of the Dead Sea and Ein-Gedi
oasis, the new spa center of the hotel is being built now. The spa

Every year, when the temperatures start to be reasonable,
we have one Shabbat every month of hiking in the desert.
A group of about 20 people from our region meet for a sportive
pleasure of hiking in the peaceful Judean desert or the Negev.
Today we visited the small Machtesh (crater). The weather
was great, the company, as usual, the best, and the landsacpe
is never disappointing.

הוקדש ליצירת פסלים מיניאטוריים בשעווה. שנים מפסלי הציפורים שלו הועתקו
לממדים גדולים לאחר מותו, והועמדו בגן המלון שלנו. בלילה הם מאד מיוחדים

Zeevik Rozenboim, a Kibbutz member and a close friend, who
passed away a few yearsago, was an artist. Part of his creative
energy was devoted to create miniature sculptures of animals.
After his death - two of these sculptures were copied to a bigger
size and they decorate our hotel's garden, facing the very special
lanscape of Ein-Gedi mountains. At night they seem to be very alive.

One of our hotel guests has taken this special picture while
participating in our moonlight hike near Massada. The group
is looking towards east, where the Dead-Sea is, while the lights
between the Chavar canyons belong to a night-party that is
organized by one of the High-Tech companies - a very popular
treat these days...

Colvillea racemosa -קולוילאת האשכולות

פריחה מקסימה זו שייכת לעץ הקולווילאה, שמקורו במדגסקר, ושם הוא
בסכנת הכחדה. בעין גדי יש כמה פרטים של עץ זה, והם מיתמרים לגובה

The Colvillea tree is from Madagascar - there, in this very
special island, it is almost extinct. The tree loves the hot
climate of Ein-Gedi. Usually we can't enjoy the close look
at the most beautiful flowers, since the tree grows very high
and the flowers bloom usually at the top. This week I
discovered a low blooming branch, broght the camera, and
here we are!

Yaeli's basketry exhibition - התערוכה של יעלי

Yaeli's exhibition was opened in a nice ceremony on

Rosh Hashana. Yaeli makes baskets, using the dates'

spikelets, and some other materials. The exhibition

will be opened until after Sukkot.

עם הליכת הבוקר מתגלה זוג חסידות בשלבי התעוררות ממנוחת הלילה
כשהן עומדות על המתקן ההיסטורי לקירור מים, ששירת את חדר האוכל
בימיו הראשונים של הקיבוץ. נדידת החסידות החלה כבר לפני כחודש, אך
להקות אחרונות עדיין חותרות בשמים דרומה, בדרכן אל ארצות החום
שבאפריקה לעונת החורף. עייפות, ככל הנראה, הביאה שתיים מן החסידות
להיפרד מלהקתן ולעשות את הלילה בקיבוץ. אחרי השעה 8 בבוקר הן כבר
לא היו שם. לא הבחנתי אם הן מחסידות ויז'ניץ או גור

These two storks were found early in the morning standing
on our historic water-cooling construction, that had served
the dining room of the Kibbutz in its first years. Migration
season of the storks has started about a nonth ago, and these
two belonged, probably, to one of the last migrating flocks.
I guess they were too exhausted to stick to the whole group,
and landed for the night rest in the Kibbutz. So tired they were,
that they let quite a lot of enthusiastic people to approach
closely and take a photo.

חניכי מחזור ג' של המכינה הקדם-צבאית בעין גדי 'מלח הארץ' הגיעו ליומם
הראשון בתכנית, על פי המסורת, במסע רגלי של יומיים במדבר יהודה. קצת
לפני זריחת השמש הופיעו החבר'ה (כ-25 במספר) עייפים אך נרגשים, בשער

בריכת השחיה של הקיבוץ וזכו בקבלת פנים עם קפה ועוגה, ברכות וטבילה

במי הבריכה המרעננים. איחולי הצלחה לחניכים ולצוות החדש

September 1st, just before sunrise at the Kibbutz swimming

pool. Twenty-five 18 year old boys have arrived

at the pool gates after 2 days of a hiking trip in the desert, to

start their educational program preparing them for a meaninful

service in the army next year. This is the 3rd year of this

program in Ein-Gedi.

גדר הגינה של יעלי מפיל את פירותיו האחרונים - תאווה לחך. וליד שער

כיף! תודה לשכנים שהרשו לקטוף. את הקוצים נלקק עד שיבוא הסתיו, עם

The mango season was embaressly poor. The passiflora
bush on Yaeli's garden fence is dropping its last sweet fruits
and now it's the time of the 'Sabres' - the cactus sweet and
delicious fruit, just by the gate from our garden towards the
Kibbutz gate. Thanks, neighbours, for letting us pick. The
gentle and thin thorns will annoy us until fall, when the dates
will be ready to be picked.

Collecting Passifloras - מלקטת הפסיפלורות

Neta (5) is on a home-visiting vacation from the U.S,
and she stays at Grandma Yaeli's and Grandpa Mani's
home in Ein-Gedi. Savta Yaeli's garden has lots of Passifloras
now, and Neta gets up early in the morning (jet-lag) to
help Yaeli collecting the ripe and sweet fruit. Picture by

Baobab Dry Flowers - פרחי באובב יבשים

קיץ. בלילות נפתחים פרחי הבאובב הלבנים, והם זוכים לביקורים נלהבים
של עלטפי פירות שונים. אותם פרחים שלא הואבקו כהלכה - נובלים עם

Summer. The Baobab opens its beautiful white flowers at
night. In the morning comes the short life of the flowers
to its end, and those flowers that where not lucky to be
visited by the fruit-bats and be polinated - dry very soon
and fall to the ground. They have a very special beauty.

שש בבוקר במדרון מתחת לביתנו. אני מגלה חבורה של חמישה יעלים זכרים
המתעוררים משנת הלילה שלהם. זו הפתעה, שכן לא ידענו שהחבר'ה אפילו

Six o'clock in the morning. I find a group of five adult male
Ibex just getting up from their night sleep in the slope under
our house! Probably there was no vacancy in our hotel!

השאר, שלושה עצי באובב. החלקה מיועדת להקמת מרכז הטיפולים החדש
של המלון, ועל כן היה עלינו להעתיק את העצים היקרים משם למקומות
חדשים. שני עצי באובב הועתקו לאזור בית-העלמין; השלישי - מעל לשער

This Baobab was uprooted, together with its two brothers,
from a plot north of the hotel's swimming pool, where a spa
center is going to be built. Two of the Baobabs were replanted
by the Kibbutz cemetary. The third, in this picture, is now by
the Kibbutz gate, welcoming the people entering the Kibbutz.

Friday, June 3rd 2011. Gil'ad Shalit is 5 years now in the
Gaza region, a captive of the Hamas. This year - every Friday
Kibbutzim members visit Jerusalem and arrange a Kabbalat
Shabbat at the protest-tent of the Shalit family, in front of
the prime minister's home. Yestersay it was Ein-Gedi's turn.
Kibbutzim who sign up for this Mitzvah today get a Friday

these hikes we had to explore this site by day. The beauty

עדיין נעים, אך הימים מתארכים מאד, ושעות החום מתרבות. הקקטוסים

הראשונים לפרוח הם דווקא הפורחים ביום. מלכות הלילה הנהדרות, אשר

פורחות בקיץ ממש - כבר תבחרנה את הלילות החשוכים, שאינם לוהטים

כימים. לקט תמונות מרחבי הגן שלנו

It is still a pleasent weather: the temperatures are reasonable,

but the days get longer and longer, so the first Cactus plants

decide to open up their magnificent flowers. They do it by day,

but the Night-Queens, that will bloom in the hotter Summer

months - they will dare to open up their giant white flowers

only at night.

חוצפה ישראלית - כך אפשר לקרוא להתנהגות היעל הזכר שיעלי מצאה
מכרסם את פרחי החמניות שלה ממש מאחורי ביתנו. ירדנו מדירתנו
אל הגינה מצוידים - אני במצלמה ויעלי באבנים קטנות להשליך על
הפורץ ולהבריחו מהגינה. עוד לפני שיעלי הספיקה לעשות עליו רושם
החליט הבחור שהספיק לו ונתן קפיצה קלה מעל לגדר - ישר אל המדרון
התלול שמאחוריה. למטה, על הכביש, הוא עוד הטיל צל ענק ונעלם

From our appartment's window Yaeli and me saw this big
male Ibex eating Yaeli's sunflowers. We hurried down to
the back of our house, equipped with a camera (me) and
little stone pebbles (Yeali) to scare him away from the garden.
Gracefully, without paying much attention to us, the Ibex
made a leap over the garden's fence, down to the steep terraces
below. Its big shadow on the asphalt road was the last sign of it -
until next time...

לערוך טקס חידוש נדרי נישואין אצלנו. המנהג מקובל ונפוץ למדי בארצות

הברית, ואף מתחיל להתפשט גם בישראל. עם בני הזוג הגיעו שני בניהם, אשר

נטלו חלק פעיל בטקס. הוכנה חופה, נמזג יין, נקראו ברכות, ואף נחתמה

We had the honour and the pleasure of celebrating a marriage

vows renewal ceremony for the Pearsall couple from the US.

They spent the Pesach days in our hotel, and asked us to run

this ceremony - exactly 20 years after the first and original

wedding. With the couple came their two sons, who took an

active part in the ceremony. Wine was drunk, blessing were said,

songs were sung, a chuppa and K'tubah were there as well.

Kol Harina is a choir & singing groups gathering, dedicated
to the memory of our member, Rina Mazor. It is the 21 year
we organize this event. Four singing groups, about a 100 singers,
took part in it this year. The Spring weather (rains & storms in
the North didn't matter to us) allowed us running the morning
workshop outside, on the background of the blooming
garden.

The memorial site is dedicated to the memory of our member

Giora Barzilay, who was killed by beduins while hiking the

desert here about 50 years ago. Every year, in the end of Winter,

members of the Kibbutz and members of Gira's family climb the

mountain to visit the site.

די צלולים. מה עושים? עולים להר צרויה לבדוק את הכושר... השביל ריק
ממטיילים, ותוך כשעה של טיפוס מאומץ (הריאות כבר אינן בנות עשרים
אם לא ידעתם...) מגיעים לפסגת הר צרויה. קצת לפני הפסגה אפשר לעצור
לתצפית מערבה אל תוך הקניון של נחל ערוגות. ממרחק אפשר לראות קבוצה
של מטיילים בראש מעלה האיסיים מתחילה לרדת בשביל, ולמטה, בתוך
נחל ערוגות, נשמעים בקושי קולותיהם של מבקרי השמורה
A steep climb to the summit of Mt. Tzruya, just above the
kibbutz, about an hour of carrying the old body up to the
places where peace and quiet are the reward to your efforts.
A little before reaching the summit you can enjoy the
landscapes of Nachal Arugot canyon. Some people call it
Shabbat pleasure!

This giant female cone of the Dioon spinulosum, has grown
slowly on the trunk of the plant for over a year. Finally it
opened to expose the hundreds of seeds ready to germinate.
This is the first time this Mexican plant shows us this very
impressing cone. In Mexico, Dioon plants can grow up to 50

Nachal Zohar has no water springs, so any water pool that
can be found there is an evidence of a Winter flood. We know
there have been no big floods this Winter, but some rains and
some flows in the canyons, that have not stopped the traffic on
the Dead Sea roads. We are waiting for the big ones!

Evey day of Chanuka another group of youngsters climb
Mt. Tzruya to light the giant Menora, about 150 meters
above the Kibbutz. The lights are seen clearly from the
Kibbutz. This custom is now about 30 tears old, and the
Kibbutz kids and youngsters are very eager to take part
in it.

The picture is not so easy to explain: Every year, around
October-November, the youth-movements in Israel celebrate
the beginning of the year's activity in a traditional event,
usually culminating in a show of fire. The kids work hours
preparing writings made of metal-wire covered by burlap
and soaked with petrol. Lighting a good looking writing is
a challenge, and when it works - everyone's happy.

קטנה של מי עין-צפית, מעין שזרימת המים ממנו אינה נראית, ואשר פרט

A water pool in Upper Nachal Tzafit, Southern Judean
Desert. It is not water from last year's floods, but a tiny
active spring, that provide enough water for this pool
only. No running water is seen under the pool. There are
signs of sheep or goat flocks that visit this place occasionly
- with the Beduins who live in this desolate part of the desert.

Once again we opened the Winter Season of our regional hiking
club. About 15 people attended this time, and we enjoyed hiking
the beautiful canyon of Nachal Tzafit, in its lower section that
meets with the Eilat road. Weather was quite warm, but pleasent.

Rakefet is taking care of our small zoo. This zoo suffered a bird-flue
last year, and lost all its birds, chicken and Emmus. Only peacocks
and mammels survived, among them - a family of goats, that is well
taken care of, and gives some of its customers some good goat-milk.

The Sukkot Tamar Festival is already a traditional and much

visited event. Our guest-house hosts a few chamber concerts

on the central lawn under the big Baobab tree. Lots of people

came to these free concerts, and the atmosphere was lovely.

Migrating season has started - החל עונת הנדידה

נדידת הציפורים דרומה אינה הסימן הראשון לסתיו. תחילה מתקצרים הימים
משמעותית, וזה אומר שהליכות-הבוקר נעשות נעימות יותר. אך הסימן
המרשים ביותר הוא, אין ספק, להקות הציפורים הנודדות אל אתרי החורף
שלהן באפריקה. להקת חסידות אחת הנמיכה עוף מעל בתי הקיבוץ, ונתפסה
בעין המצלמה. לא ברור אם הן מחסידות גור או ויז'ניץ
The first sign of Autumn is, no doubt, the shortening of the
days. The weather is still hot, very hot, but the sunrise comes
later, which makes the morning-walks more pleasent. Then
come the migrating birds, flying South to their Winter sites.
A large flock of storks suprised us last week, diving down
above our houses. Luckily, my camera was at hand.

השעה 5:45 והשמש עומדת לזרוח. 35 חניכי מחזור ב' של המכינה הקדם-צבאית

בעין-גדי מגיעים אל מדשאת בריכת השחיה של הקיבוץ לאחר לילה של הליכה

מאומצת מאזור נחל צאלים. החניכים קיבלו בהפתעה במקום נסיעה ישירה אל

הקיבוץ - מסע של יומיים במדבר יהודה (סוף אוגוסט, זוכרים?) . המסע הגיע

בשלום אל סופו, כשלצעירים העייפים ממתינים בני-משפחה, חברים, חברי קיבוץ

אוהדים וחברי עמותת 'מלח הארץ'. זה מחזור ב' של התכנית, כפול בגודלו, ועדיין

כולו בנים. נאחל לכולם הצלחה, צמיחה, הנאה והעמקת שורשים בעין-גדי

The second year of the program "Melach Haaretz', a pre-army

educational program, has started. 35 boys, highschool graduates,

have chosen to take part in it for 10 very intensive months of

study, social activities and lots of physical challenges. Instead of

driving straight to Ein-Gedi, the boys were surprised and taken

to a 2 days hiking trip in the Judean desert. Arriving on sunrise

at the swimming pool of the Kibbutz, they were welcomed by

families, Kibbutz members, friends, staff and members of 'Melach

Haaretz' organization. We all wish you success, growth, fun and

a lot more!

אחת התמונות האהובות עלי צולמה בנחל חמר שבדרום מדבר יהודה. דווקא
בימים אלה, כשהצלסיוס מטפס בצהרים מעל ה-45 , ורובנו מסתגרים בארבע
אמותינו הממוזגות מאד,טוב להיזכר בימי החורף הנעימים, בהם אנו זוכים
לטייל ברמת המדבר ובנחליו וליהנות מהנוף הכל-כך מיוחד. בשבוע שעבר חזרנו
מבולגריה, שם נהנינו מיערות האשוחים ומאגמי ההרים - אל הבית שלנו, המדבר
One of my favorite pictures was taken in the Winter in Nachal
Chemar, in the South of the Judean desert. It is Summer now,
and an extremely ot Summer, and the hikes in the desert canyons
seem to be impossible now. From our air-conditioned ascape we dream
of the cooler and more pleasent days of November-March, when
this beauty of the desert will be accesible again.

This was probably a thick cable or rope, left on the Dead Sea

beach long ago, sprayed by the salty water, and with the decline

of the sea waters - dried and made hard, and impossible to

identify - looks now like a piece of modern art.

Ripe Papayas - פפאיות בשלות

לפפאיות אין בעין-גדי עונת פרי מובהקת. גלי הבשלה מופיעים מדי פעם, ללא

סדר כלשהו, ואורך העונה גם הוא לא צפוי. הפפאיות בגנה של יעלי נותנות

לאחרונה הרבה פרי. שני עצים מניבים פירות גדולים במיוחד, וטעמם - משובח

מאד. אם ברצונכם ליהנות מפרי מוצלח - פשוט שתלו בגינה מספר פפאיות

שונות, הנביטו זרעים של פפאיות טובות, וותרו על האחרות. הפפאיה שבתמונה

נבטה מעצמה מתוך מיכל הקומפוסט, ממנו היא נהנית עד היום, ללא ספק

Papayas don't have regular seasons in Ein-Gedi. About 5

different Papaya trees grow in Yaeli's garden, and they all

give fruit a few weeks already. The tree in the picture came

out of a seed in the compost container, and enjoys all the time

the good feeding from it. The fruit is quite large, and the taste

is very good. Since you can never be sure what quality of fruit

will a new tree bear - it is good to plant a few different trees.

Old Kibbutz Site - אתר ההאחזות

עם כיבוש אזור עין-גדי ב-1948 הוקם מאחז צבאי במקום הזה, ובשנת 1953

הוקמה פה היאחזות הנח"ל, אחת הראשונות בישראל. חיי ההיאחזות היו קצרים

וב-1956 הפכה לקיבוץ אזרחי. ב-1959 עברו חברי הקיבוץ לנקודת הקבע, על

הגבעה שמדרום לאפיק נחל ערוגות, אך אתר ההיאחזות לא ננטש עדיין, שכן

פעילויות אכסניית הנוער ובית-ספר שדה עין-גדי נמשכו במקום, עד שגם הם

עברו לנקודות הקבע שלהן, מדרום לאפיק נחל דוד. מאז נטוש המקום. רק לאחרונה

הוחלט להתחיל בשיקום שלושה המבנים ששרדו כאן, בסיוע המועצה לשימור

אתרים והמועצה האזורית 'תמר'. יותחל בניקוי האתר ובחיזוק שלושת המבנים

ובהמשך - מתוכנן להפוך את האתר לנקודת משיכה חינוכית למבקרים

About 200 m' from the ancient Ein-Gedi synagougue - the old

site of the Kibbutz still is waiting for reconstruction. The new

Israeli settlement started here in 1948, as an army post, then

a Nachal He'achzoot was established here in 1953, and after 3

years - it turned to be a civilian Kibbutz. The Kibbutz has moved

to its permanent spot in 1959, but fpr a few years after that there

have been activities of the youth hostel and field school continued

here until they also got their permanent settlement by Nachal

David. Then the site was deserted. Work of reconstruction and

preservation will start this year, in hope to make this place a

historic attraction for visitors.

Ein-Bokek fortress - מצודת עין-בוקק

Ein-Bokek is the biggest water source in the South-West part

of the Dead-Sea. Its water sirved a thriving farming ranch, probably

with dates and perfume-trees. The picture was taken by Gideon

Hadas, who succeeded to capture the ancient with the modern

- the old fortress and the new hotels at the background.

Two different plants, though from the same botanical

family, create this picture. In the front - a seed-pod of

Pachypodium that got ripe, opened up, and let its seeds

pour out with their silky parachutes, expecting to be

carried by a light wind to another place to germinate.

In the background - the pink flowers of the Adenium,

that decorate our garden all the hot months - a very long

season...

A traumatic event in the Kibbutz zoo - two Emu birds were found

dead, and the diagnosis was a kind of bird-flu. The result - all the

birds of the zoo were put to death. This picture, taken by Reut

Yaaran, brings back the memories of our proud peacocks, that were

residents of the zoo for many many years. Hopefully - we will start

growing new birds, including peacocks.

A walk on the beach can lead to discoveries of very odd

things, like this big metal construction that was, years

ago, in the water, got covered with thick layers of salt,

and later exposed to the air by the shrinking lake. What

it was is not easy to tell. The guess is - a part of an

experimentary above-water solar pool, that was

abandoned about 2 years after it was built in the 80's.

The Soddom Apples grow extremely fast. Since the fruit is

hollow, the fruit can grow really in about two weeks. Then,

when time is ready and the apple is ripe (not for eating?) -

it can open and let the seeds fly with their silk parachutes

to find a new place to germinate.

Morning walk around the Kibbutz, discovering the night-

sleep area of a group of male adult Ibex, just under the

Kibbutz fence, in the guest-house neighbourhood. Some

have woken up, and are now watching the rising sun, while

others are still sleeping. Good morning!

Independence Day Parade - מצעד יום העצמאות

Every year we have an Independence-Day parade. Since most

of the Kibbutz members take part in the parade - every one who

comletes his performance joins the audience... In the picture -the

Date-Growers tractor, with our home-made special stage that

lifts you up to the hights of the trees to pick the dates. This stage

serves in the parade the flags-holders.

It's still April. The heat is still bearable. There's still time before

the Poinciana trees will decorate our garden with their red

blooming, and the Queen of the Night cactus will open their big

flowers - at nught, of course. But some cactus plants have decided

A look towards the South - to the Kibbutz, from the ancient temple

of Ein-Gedi. This temple was active, according to the archeologists,

in the chalcolitic time - and not much is known about where the

people who visited the temple lived. Not many findings were

discovered here, but the wonderful objects that where found

in the treasure cave of Nachal Mishmar are, probably,

from this temple. It is still a mystery why Ein-Gedi people

took the temple's treasures all the way to hide them in

Nachl Mishmar.

Chavar Formations - תצורות חוואר

An enlarged replica of the miniature sculpture - 'The busy bird',

is now decorating the panoramic trail viewing the landscapes

of Nachal Arugot, near the guest-house. The original bird was made

by our friend and member of the Kibbutz, Zeevik Rozenboim, who

גשמי ברכה בכמויות לא שגרתיות מעל הרי ירושלים הביאו גל נוסף של שטפונות

אל נחלי מדבר יהודה. הבלוג לא עודכן בשבת מהסיבה הפשוטה: נתקעתי מצפון

לנחל קדרון ולא יכולתי להגיע הביתה מירושלים... אומרים שבירושלים ירדו ביממה

שעברה כמאתיים מילימטרים! הקדרון לא היה הנחל היחיד שהציף וחסם את

כביש 90. גם דרגות, חבר וצאלים זרמו. השנה תהיה פריחת אביב יפה במדבר

The blog was not updated on Shabbat for a very practical reason:

I was stuck north of Nachal Kidron on my way back home from

Jerusalem. Kidron and Dragot flooded the road, and there were

more floods south of Ein-Gedi. In the 24 hours of the Shabbat

there were rains of about 200 mm over Jerusalem! Expecting

a very nice Spring bloom this year in the desert.

פרחי הכוכב הננסי מהשנה שעברה התייבשו עם תחילת הקיץ, ועלי הכותרת

שלהם התקפלו פנימה, וסגרו על הזרעים כדי להגן עליהם מרוח. עם רדת הגשם

בכמות מספקת, נרטבים עלי הכותרת ונפתחים, כדי לאפשר לזרעים ליפול אל

הקרקע ולנבוט. אם הגשם מועט - לא נפתחים הפרחים, וכך נמנע מהזרעים לנבוט

אל סביבה שאינה רטובה מספיק. צולם ביום גשום באפיק נחל חבר

The flowers of Asteriscus hierochunticus , a tiny yellow Winter

plant, have dried in the first hot days of last Spring. The petals

folded to the center, giving shelter and protection to their seeds.

Only if sufficient rain will come - the wet petals will open and let

the seeds drop to the wet ground - to germinate safely. If the rain

is light and short - the dry petals will wait for a better day. The

picture was taken on a rainy day in Nachal Chever.

A new sinkhole is born - בולען חדש נולד

כך נראה בולען בימיו הראשונים ממש: הסדקים מסביב לשפתו מעידים על

הפעילות המתרחשת ממש מול עינינו. זה אתר בולענים חדש ממש - בחוף הים

מצפון לשפך נחל דוד, באזור בו לא היו בולענים כלל עד עתה. באזור זה מספר

נביעות של מים מתוקים ושל מי גפרית, ויפה לטייל בו. נראה שצריך יהיה

This is how a new baby sinkhole looks like: You can see

the cracks in the ground around it, an evidence that the

process is happening in front of our eyes... The place -

about one km north of Nachal David, right on the beach.

No sinkholes were there until these weeks.

Memories fro an old past - זכרונות מהעבר הרחוק

לפני יותר מעשרים שנה נערכו על מימי ים המלח נסיונות של הקמת ברכה

סולארית צפה. הבריכה, שמטרתה היתה הפקת אנרגיה סולארית, נקשרה

אל עוגנים צפים. הניסוי לא נמשך יותר משנים ספורות, ונזנח. חלקים של

הבריכות נמשו מן המים והובאו אל היבשה, ואחר חזרו ונשטפו אל המים

והחלו לשייט על פני ים המלח בסביבות עין-גדי. מצוף זה, חלוד כולו, וצופה

בשכבת מלח רצינית, נח לו כעת על חוף הים מצפון לנחל דוד. צילום: מני גל

More than 20 years ago experiments were made - trying

to construcr a floating solaric pool above the Dead Sea water

surface. The pool was anchored to some floating balls about

2 km south of the Kibbutz. The experiment was abandoned,

and parts of the structure were taken to land, later to be washed

again towards the water. This is one of the remaining floating

balls, now resting about 1 kn north of Nachal David. Picture

Fun at Nachal Og - מכייפים בנחל אוג

Nachal Og is a small canyon not far from Kibbutz Almog, at the

North of the Dead Sea valley. Until a few years ago - the sueage

water of Ma'ale Adumim was flowing in the canyon, which made

it impossible to enjoy its landscapes. Now the canyon is ckean, and

lots aof people, families as well, come to have the fun climbing its

The staff of the Botanicl Garden office were surprised

by this Daphnis Nerii, a kind of moth that lives usually

on the poisonous Oleander bushes. It was resting on the

office door in the early morning. We wonder if this moth

likes also the Adenium bushes, which belong to the same

זוג יעלים זכרים בוגרים, יום אחר יום , ללא בושה, נכנסים דרך השער הראשי

של הקיבוץ (אותו ניתן לראות בתמונה בתוך קרניו של היעל הימני), עולים אל

גן המדרגות שמתחת לביתנו, ומתבייתים על גינת הירק של יעלי. הם זוללים עלי

תרד ומחסלים שיחי עגבניות, ועוד הקרן נטויה... גדר שנבנתה בחופזה ומטר

אבנים שהושלך לעברם שיכנעו אותם להיזהר. מה עושים כששנינו בעבודה, בבית

A couple of mature male Ibex have entered the Kibbutz right

through its main gate (the gate can be seen inside the horns

of the right Ibex) a few times last week, climbed the terasses

of our garden, and straight into Ibex' heaven - Yaeli's vegetable

Garden. hey loved the tomatoes, the spinach etc... and caused

quite a lot of damage, until a fence was built, and Yaeli threw

Breakfast on the lawn - ארוחת בוקר על הדשא

The Ibex are hungry. Rain was not enough in Ein-Gedi until

now. The Ibex enter the Kibbutz gardens with no fear or shame

and have their meals with grass, flowers, vegetables etc...

מתוך שישה בצילום קבוצתי משעשע לכבוד החנוכה. זה אינו חלק מאימוני הכושר

20 young men, on an educational program between Highschool and

the army service, cekebrate Hanukka in a happy group picture, dressed

as Maccabi's. The program seems to be very successful, and the boys

have asked to stay 4 more months on the program. f the army will say

'yes' - we will enjoy their stay until the beginning of Summer.

מנדלה על הקרקע, עשויה מחומרי טבע - חצץ, חלוקי אבן וחול בצבעים שונים. את

הסדנה מנחות מיכלי וריקי, ממייסדות האתר, המגיעות לעין-גדי ממרחק, כדי לפגוש

באווירה המקומית המיוחדת את המעוניינים בחוויה המשותפת. המנדלה לא אמורה

A weekend workshop at BEIT HATAMAR, a center for ancient

and natural arts and crafts. Michali and Riki, the founders of this

site, come to Ein-Gedi from far away to meet their fans, and to

build with mud, experience basketry and in the morning - craete

together a mandala, made on the ground with natural materials

like coloured sand, pebbles and gravel. The mandala is not supposed

to last forever - it will disintegrate during the coming weeks.
